When your Granddaughter wants a birthday cake and you deliver. Quite a fashionista and to know her, is to know that she makes quite an impression in her presence. It is only fitting that her birthday cake represents the Beautiful, Sassy Diva Girl that she is.
Dabbling in the baking world has exposed me to so many different techniques and ideas. Coming across the creation of a Barbie Cake, I thought it was the coolest thing. The perfect opportunity presented itself when my granddaughter told me she wanted a Barbie for her birthday. She was never one to dabble much in them previously. This was a perfect time for me to try my hand on a Diva Girl cake.
The base consist of a Chocolate Bundt Cake and two small single serving cakes. While, I could have purchased a half barbie to sit right on top, I am using the whole doll. Edible and playable all in one. My granddaughter is a blended little girl with both African American and Hispanic roots. It was important to me to find one that she will love. Being able to find a doll with the same features as herself was just a bonus for me. I wrap her up in some saran wrap and place her in the center of the cut out cake. It is as simple as it sounds.
As a Cottage Baker, I cannot use any dairy in frosting. This was an opportunity to practice cake decorating using mock buttercream. I chose a color palette of Teal, Purple & Pink to give her a blended color profile. Using a small Open Star tip, I piped away covering the cake as well as her torso area. A larger Open Star tip creates elaborate floral decorations lining the bottom of her dress. With the addition of a few edible pearls and gold glitter, her dress was completely adorned and beautiful. While it wasn’t perfect, it was perfect for my granddaughter and first time around. She’ll serve 8-10 people and provide a doll to play with. I will try this again when given the opportunity. Learning throughout the process gives me ideas on how to make it better.
