Something about dreaming of a good ole fashion comfort meal to fill your belly and warm your soul. Smothered Salisbury Steak swimming in luscious Onion Gravy doesn’t have to be a figment of your imagination. It is right here! Juicy meaty Salisbury Steak filled with Peppers and Onions smothered in an Onion Gravy. Made with nothing more than common ingredients you have in your home right now!

Salisbury Steak doesn’t have to be as complicated as it sounds. Simply put, it is basically a hamburger patty made of ground beef and other ingredients that is usually served in a gravy. It can be as simply as you want it to as complicated as you choose to make it. I like a little of both worlds. So simplicity is to the Salisbury Steak and just a little fancy for my Onion Gravy. Don’t let it scare you, time is of essence and this recipe is totally worth it.

A mixture of Ground Beef, Green Peppers & Onions, Egg and Soy Sauce, in addition to common everyday seasonings is the base of my Patty. Most would add bread crumbs and other ingredients to assist with binding and moisture. I believe keeping my recipe simple is perfect just the way it is. Some would opt to use a leaner meat with less fat. In this instance, I need the fat as it adds flavor and juiciness to it. For this recipe, I chose a 80%/20% but if you want to use a leaner option, by all means do so.

Onion Gravy is exactly as it sounds. Gravy made out of Onions. Rendering Onions down to a caramelized state provides a little sweetness so what it is important is to counter the sweetness with savory. Adding Vegetable Stock and Butter gave it the richness it needed while providing a little something more than just Onion flavor. I created a slurry as a thickening agent assisting in delivering a gravy like texture. Bringing all of this together is a home run on Smothered Salisbury Steak, futhermore it is delicious. Served over Mashed Potatoes with a side of Garlic Green Beans, it doesn’t get any comforting than that.

Instructions

Salisbury Steak Preparation

  • Preheat Over to 350℉
  • Place Ground Beef, diced Green Pepper & Onions, Garlic Herb Seasoning, Adobo, Onion Powder, Cumin, 2 tbsp Soy Sauce and Whisked Egg into a Bowl. Using your hands, mix ingredients to incorporate being sure evenly distributed.
  • Form mixture into 6 evenly sized patties and placed on a baking dish.
*** I use a baking dish that has a rack insert so that as it bakes, the patties are not sitting in the grease. I spray the rack with nonstick spray prior to placing patties on it.
  • Cover with foil and Bake at 350℉ for 35-40 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165℉. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of portions and oven being used.

Meanwhile – Onion Gravy

  • Heat Skillet on Medium/High. Drizzle with Olive Oil and place 2 tbsp of Butter into Skillet.
  • Once Butter is melted, add sliced Onions and begin sautéing for 10 minutes stirring periodically until Onions begin to soften and become translucent.
  • Create Cornstarch slurry by mixing ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Add a generous pinch of Salt & Pepper, Vegetable Stock, Browning Sauce, Cornstarch Slurry & remaining 1 tbsp of Soy Sauce. Stir and continuing cooking in Skillet for additional 10 minutes. Sauce will thicken as cooking process continues. Lower cooking temperature to low and allow to simmer. Stir periodically so that it will not burn. Taste to see if additional seasoning is needed.
*** If sauce isn't thick enough, create another slurry and add in slowly until desired consistency is reached.

Salisbury Steak

  • Once Salisbury Steak is done, remove from oven. Place Salisbury Steak into the Onion Gravy being sure to spoon mixture over them. You can continue to allow them to simmer at that point or serve immediately over Mashed Potatoes and your favorite side of vegetables.
*** If you are using a baking dish with no rack, you can pour gravy directly over Patties 10-15 minutes prior to finished time to allow to finish up together.
